I use to wear Acuvue Ext. wear but they change them and stop making the ones I wore. Since they did that I couldn't find any I could keep in my eyes long. that is why I started looking at the surgery. I went through 100 brands and types before i finally did it.

This thread reminded me to get my crap together and go have Lasik. We put the full amount away into our medical spending card this year and we lose it if we don't use it.

Good luck! That sounds worse than sinus surgery. Be sure to take lots of pictures and post them here.

I have witnessed a thread about a guy getting a vasectomy. It had pictures. It was epic and educational.

I was thinking vasectomy. I'm excited to get mine, but it won't be for another couple years until we finish breeding.

    Lasik done.

The whole thing took about 10 minutes. Missi took a few pictures throughout that are on my Facebook page. There is a monitor that shows a close-up of the whole procedure for anyone in the building to watch (you can request that the blinds be shut). They started me with 10mg of Valium about 20 minutes prior to the surgery. The worst part during the surgery is whatever they use to keep your eyelids open, it's metal and actually goes under your eyelids. I couldn't see the thing, but it was quite uncomfortable. The first machine cuts the flap on each eye, then the second machine is the laser that cuts the tissue. It was all fairly unremarkable; I wish I had a video of it.

The 2 hours after the surgery belong in the top 5 pain moments of my life. It felt like a continuous stream of liquid soap and sand being poured in my eye for two hours or so. A valium-induced nap and I woke up feeling basically perfect, just a slight headache. I have to wear sunglasses at all times today (including indoors). I have a followup appt tomorrow and I only need to wear sunglasses outside for about 3 days. As of right now, I can see better than I could with glasses or contacts. I have a bad case of dry eye and some expected short term blurriness...that's about it. Couldn't be much more pleased with the whole thing.

Ugh.. no way.. no fucking way..

I cant stand it when getting an eye exam and i have to keep my eyes open for that bright white light that scans the back of your eyes... Or when the puff of air thing gets really close I could not sit there with my eyes held open while some machine gets close and actually cuts my eyes.

The time I got hit in the face with a rake handle was enough pain.. My eye felt like you said yours did.. until they put a numbing drop in it to examine my eye. then the pain went away. For a little while.. it hurt that whole night and I had to put drops in and ointment under the eye lids when I went to sleep. next morning, no pain. The doctor said the eye constantly regenerates the outer layer and that overnight, any damage would heal and wouldn't hurt anymore.

My sister looked into having this done. She was told that it's not recommended for someone with dry eyes, because your eyes will be even more dry once you have the surgery. She was also told to wait until she knows her eyes are done changing, because it won't stop your vision from changing and you could still end up getting glasses. This is just what she told me, so I don't know if this is true for each person.

I am pretty sure about the "eyes still changing" part. The place where I had my procedure has a lifetime correction guarantee, so once you have paid, you don't need to pay again if they need updated in a few years. However, if they think your eyes are still changing significantly, they would turn you away. They said that they turn away about 20% of the people that walk in the door. I think you would just have to read the fine print and be very sure about it.

I'm not sure about the dryness part. They said that my eyes would be extremely dry for several weeks. I did already have some trouble with dry eyes (might have something to do with play Halo from 6p until 3a...), but my eyes are more comfortable now than they have been in years. My thought is that a lot of the my dry eyes was a result of contacts, though I did always take them out at night. I'm sure it is all very dependent on the person.

Congrats on sitting through that. I'm hoping one of these days to have it done. I've been wearing glasses/contacts for about 20 years now and I'm pretty much sick of them.

The end result of that surgery sounds awesome but the idea of being awake during it fucking freaks me out. I'll stick with contacts for now.

Glad everything worked out, Slitt. I don't mind my glasses too much, but it would be nice not to have to deal with them during firefighting/drills/etc. I have to see if my insurance covers it and how much I'd have to pay towards it. Maybe someday I'll do it.

I had to use the drops a few week after mine while they were healing. After about a month I stopped using them just about all together.

Another dead thread comes back to life. I'm seriously considering sucking up my anxiety and having the Lasik procedure done next year. Especially since our new wonderful national health care plan will limit pre-tax flex dollars starting in 2013 to only $2500. Has anyone else had this done?

Looks like I've already commented to this effect, but it is easily one of the best things I have done in my life. I don't know how to assign a meaningful value to it, but considering the amazing benefits of the surgery, paying $3500 for this procedure was the deal of a lifetime for me.

Just all the little stupid things like dry eyes, contact falling out, smudged glasses, bent frames, and daily cleaning routines are now out of my life. I just never realized how much effort I was putting into my glasses and contacts until it was magically fixed in five minutes (plus an hour of searing, whimpering pain).

Were glasses really that inconvenient? The only complaint I have ever had about wearing glasses is I wish I could more easily wear sunglasses.
