I'm proposing an experiment hoping that this goes well.
The Monday before a show is to be recorded, a thread will be created for the episode to allow people to offer suggestions for a topic of discussion or offer a suggestion or give feedback in general.
A calendar entry will be made as well to remind people that the show is going to be recorded. This weeks calendar entry (http://forum.8bitbrigade.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=141&day=2010-7-29&c=1)
Other ways to submit a topic, feedback, or suggestion.
1) Post a message on our Facebook Fan page (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Brigadier-Broadcast/99809541834?ref=ts)
2) Post a short message to our Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/8BBPodcast)
3) Leave a voicemail message on our call-in line. 708-8BIT-POD (708-824-8763)

It may sound like a sappy topic but why don't you guys give some insight on what games, from the beginning of your gaming life have influenced you to keep on gaming. What are the hallmark games from your gaming history. The one that hooked you, the one's that kept you going into your 20's/30's/40's. Kind of a retrospective from the hosts of the show.

I like Polo's idea. I'd rather not talk about my feet. :sarcasm:

Guys, this episode is up, and I think it's one of our better efforts, especially considering we weren't hammered.
Make sure to listen through the outtakes.
I am mad - I have some really funny outtakes on my PC from when Gramps dropped out. Remind me, Gramps, and I'll send it to you to use for the next episode.

I really enjoyed listening back to it. I think I've gotten a bit better with doing "quick hits" on games, which keeps the show moving along. Polo's topic was a lot of fun, too
Definitely get me those outtakes, Duster. I can definitely throw them in for the next episode.

I am in the middle of the discussion of past games and I have to say I am very disappointed so far in the lack of PC heritage.
X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter
MUDding (the first implementation of online clans)
Nethack
Thief
Ultima IV (Quest for the Avatar)
Modem Wars
Trade Wars
All games that took me from elementary school all the way through to college and into gaming now.
X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter was head to head Lan multiplayer done pretty early.
Mudding was pretty much the introduction of MMORPGs done in a text fashion and allowed for clan play. This would have been mid-90s.
Trade Wars was my first online multiplayer game ever. You dialed into a local BBS and made your move. Others could make their moves when they dialed in and had a chance - you could only have one person logged in at a time.

Modem Wars let you dial another player directly (using a sweet 1200 baud modem!) and play a strategy game directly with them. That was trippy enough for me because you could actually send messages to one another during game (iirc)!

I felt intimidated enough with the age issue.
I loved mudding back in the day, though I think I got into it when it was on its decline.
Never played Nethack, modem wars etc.

I actually played a fair bit of Xwing v Tie Fighter over modem, but not nearly as much as I played doom over modem.
Also, the way the question was worded skewed the results (probably making the results more interesting).

Never played XvT over modem - we just used a LAN in college. I don't recall ever playing Doom over modem... but I think I played Hexen via modem (that was the fantasy FPS, correct?).

Except for Doom, Quake, Civ, and Sierra adventure games, I didn't play a ton of PC games back in the day.

Yeah, Hexen was billed as a sister title to Doom. Maybe also published by iD? But it wasn't as good. It did have okay modem play.
I used to play a lot of PC games, but you were limited in what you could play over modem to what your friends had.

Yeah - back in the day when copy protection involved giant manuals or code wheels. Also when pirating involved 5 and a 1/4 inch discs and a xerox machine.

Yeah, I used to copy those code wheels and use the brass pushpin things to keep them together.

X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter -Awesome game!
MUDding (the first implementation of online clans) Very limited play, by the time I tried it, it was somewhat boring... like playing Zork on the Xbox..
Nethack - sounds familiar, but don't think I really played it
Thief - Sucked!
Ultima IV (Quest for the Avatar) - not sure if I played anything besides Ultima Online! (which kinda sucked)
Modem Wars - I got nothing
Trade Wars - ditto

The Thief series was the high point for the entire stealth genre.
Ultima Online wasn't really anything like the old RPGs imo. The old RPGs also came in these monster boxes with cloth maps, fake coins, and all kinds of extra crap that now would make it a big collector's edition.
Mudding was really only fun if you played with friends and were able to group up to kill things. Or if you had absolutely no social skills at all. I won't comment on why I enjoyed it... ;)
You would know if you played Nethack. Simple ASCII graphics and ball-breaking difficult.

We have had the conversation before. I just assumed that if you didn't understand how great the series was... Well there was no help for you. ;)
