Attention, The 8-Bit Brigade forum has encountered a major error. I am trying to resolve the issue and hope that I can have everything from posts, etc, remain the same. If for some reason I am unsuccessful, my only option would be to install a fresh forum and begin to re-create things from the ground up. Please [...]

Well.. we are back in business. The fix was simple and was found with the help of our web hosting company.

All posts and messages are intact and things are functional again.

Hopefully everyone was still entertained in the chatbox. Also hope some people were able to visit the other GGN websites and show them some Brigadier love.

So what was the issue? Technical issues on the hosting side?

Somehow the version of PHP was changed from 4 to the latest version 5 on our domain.

5 worked, for the most part, but this slightly older vBulletin installation wasn't coded to make use of 5 I guess. Once the webhost support person put it back to php v4, everything worked again. It must have been a glitch that I'm not sure how it happened.

When it happened, at the time I was installing the latest version of vBulletin in a subdirectory and set up a brand new database to test it out and start planning for a possible upgrade.
The only thing I can think of is that somehow the new installation changed/forced the php version change on its own. Which is odd, but who knows. I didn't think to look at that setting myself because I did not change it nor did the test vB intsallation state that it would change any setting like that.

So should we be considering an upgrade of the software at some point in the near future?

Well in the past upgrades have cost a fee and essentially required the passing of the hat to pay for the upgrade. I assumed he wasn't going to pay for it himself.... therefore the we. ;)

No.. the upgrading of the forum software would be free since we purchased a license for it when the forum first started and we pay a yearly license fee. That entitles us to keep using the software plus upgrade it anytime new versions come out.

So, no additional fees necessary for upgrading the forum software. I am not sure though since what we have is working.

Social groups and some other fluff features like that.

vBulletin v 4.0 should be out soon. I think I might wait for that and upgrade us from scratch and move our current forum installation to the side as a backup and reference.

I know other gaming clans have done something similar at least once in their history. It sucks a little initially because it would be starting over with no history. But, I can keep the current forum around to move key threads and such to the new forum.

When and if I do that.. I'd probably shut the forum down for a weekend to be able to work on it and then open it up when done. I'd spend the time installing the new forum, making sure that all the same forum areas and permissions and groups are in place. Copy over all the user accounts and some key posts.

It would also be a good time to do things like images needed for post counts instead of using the halo medals currently in place and other image things.

Ahh, but all those other interesting posts responding to my comments then wouldn't make sense.
