With Bungie developing a sure-to-fail RTS, they don’t have to give you Halo 4. Because making a Halo game is almost like printing money, someone has to do it…

Who is Gearbox and how did they get the rights to Halo 4? Is it owned by Microsoft?
I'm not sure I like this development. It hasn't worked out so well for games like COD.

Well, it's just a rumor, but I think that OXM is one of the more reliable sources.

Looks like they've ported lots of games and made Brothers in Arms games.
Part of me thinks it is a terrible idea...trying to breathe new life into an old formula...but Halo needs new life.

It also looks like they are developing Samba de Amigo...

I was sure another developer was doing Halo Wars.

Bungie isnt doing Halo Wars, Ensemble is. And I also don't like the idea of another developer handling a Halo title. I think Ensemble will do a good job, but anything other than an RTS really should be from Bungie...or else i think its all going to spin violently out of control. =/

My take:
Bungie's going to let someone else do the campaign while they work on the multiplayer.
Just an idea.

That could be all kinds of good.
As long as they don't break the campaign like CoD3.

I could easily forgo 10 hours of campaign drudgery to have the MP in my hands sooner.

I thought it just had something to do with Bungie working on something else, so I assumed it was the RTS. If Ensemble is making the RTS, then does MS control the rights to the Halo-verse?

I am actually surprised that they haven't tried to do a online Multiplayer only Halo release.
Give us a dozen maps, promise x number each few months, some nice playlist choices.

I think Bungie is working on another project, but they haven't announced what it is yet. They were supposed to have a huge announcement at or around the time of E3, but they canceled it last minute. I remember bs angel posting about it on her blog. They never said why the announcement was canceled. Nobody has any idea what they are working on.

Oh yeah, I remember the failed announcement. They were going to have Luke back on 1upyours to talk about it, but the announcement was cancelled.

Yes, Microsoft owns the Halo-verse, as part of the agreement with Bungie going independent again. That's how Ensemble is able to do Halo Wars. Microsoft can authorize anything they want with the Halo universe. They didn't elaborate on whether that includes the code for Halo or just models and story line and whatnot. That probably wouldn't matter if it was being developed for the next generation console, though, since the coding would have to be started from scratch, like Halo 2 to Halo 3.

Microsoft pulled the plug on the E3 announcement. Bungie didn't elaborate more than that. I'm guessing that it's not something in the Halo universe, though, and might not be a first person shooter. It would not be much of a stretch for it to be a fantasy game of some sort. They went from the Marathon series to the Myth series before doing Oni and Halo. Sci-fi to fantasy to sci-fi again.

I believe the main reason for pulling the plug on the E3 announcement was because Sony and Nintendo had really weak showings announcement wise. So they decided to keep their cards close to the chest, waiting on a better time.

Bungie has stated that they are working with Ensemble on Halo Wars, providing information and the like. But that after Halo Wars, they would have no more involvement with any new Halo titles.
I had heard that they were working on a new Marathon series

In Game Informer, I believe they speculate that the reason the Bungie announcement didnt happen was because the Microsoft conference was overrunning, and due to time constraints, it got cancelled.
The same article also says that there's speculation that the postponed Bungie/MS announcement will eventually get its own devoted conference in the near future.
This is from my memory, so apologies if I am not 100% in recollecting. I can check later when I get home.

Actually Bungie confirmed they are currently working on a Halo title, and they have hinted that they were not working on anything to do with Marathon (from questions raised from the H3 Legendary ending). Though I personally would like to see something new from the Marathon IP.

Mostly right! The reason that was given for pulling Bungie was time constraints...though no one has been able to verify that any time restraints were put on the event.
But yes it has been said that whatever Bungie wanted to release about their new game and the Superintendent will have its own release/premiere thingy.

Gearbox did a fine job on the Port of Halo:CE on the PC, in fact I think they did a better job than Bungie themselves would have done. With that being said the people at Bungie are beyond stupid for not making more Halo games as whatever they make next with surely be shit in comparison. And I believe Gearbox will do a fine job on the next Halo if they are indeed doing it. It's an easy rumor to fabricate though since Gearbox has been here before.

While recognizing Gearbox has some chops in this department i still have the disappointment from the CoD swaps between developers being relatively terrible because they were clearly not in the same game line. Bungie has a certain feel to their game that is uniquely theirs (just like most great developers do) and someone else doing something in that Verse seems risky. Blizzard is a great developer. Bungie is a great developer. I would be worried if Blizzard was doing Halo 4 and Bungie was doing Starcraft 2.

Its not really Bungie's decision to make another Halo or not. Sure they could turn down the offer but ultimately its up to M$. M$ is only working with Bungie (and have hired ex-Bungie Guy Frank O'Connor) to keep the canon in one piece.

While I am not a huge fan of the COD series, i would definitely hate to see good/bad flops within the halo franchise. Im a huge Bungie fan and would love to see them work on another Halo game. But unless its a spinoff (Like Halo Wars) I would rather not have another Halo game, then to have a Halo game not done by Bungie.

From my understanding it was Bungie's decision to not (stupid as shit) and it's Microsoft's (wise) decision to make another Halo game. The game could suck but it's gonna keep Microsoft making the cash. Bungie's next game comes with no guarantees.

Where was that posted? Bungie has said they will keep making Halo games, but really they can only do it while M$ tells them they can. They could easily hand the reigns over to any other developer. I can completely understand why Bungie would want to explore other IP's though. Talk about being burnt out. Id rather they take a step back and see another game they make, before coming back to Halo.

Bungie has stated openly numerous times that thier next project was not going to be another Halo title, that in itself is enough to say that they've turned down Halo 4. MS isn't going to sit around and wait for Bungie to finish screwing around with other releases.
I'm not trying to say that I don't like the Halo series or that I don't like Bungie, but let's be honest here. If it weren't for MS snatching them up for the release of Halo:CE on the Xbox Bungie would still only be known by the dozen people who game on Macs. If MS wants another Halo game you make yourself available. You want to make some other game? Fine hire more people and make it on the side. I'm sure MS would rather have Bungie at the reigns. Of course with another developer there is always the chance that we could see an actual advance in the gameplay.

I didn't mean to imply that you had anything against Halo or Bungie (and if it came across that way, I apologize) but Bungie is working on another Halo title (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/16/microsoft-confirms-bungie-is-developing-new-halo/)...probably not "Halo 4" but the rumors are leaning towards a tactical shooter, on top of two other (as yet unnamed/unannounced (http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=14920)) projects.

Like Martin had said, Bungie had stated when H3 was coming that it was the last one. Then they amended their statement to say that it was the last in the storyline (which implied we might see prequels or somesuch). This was around the time i think people were foaming at the mouth thinking a Halo MMORPG was PC bound.
So in essence, you are both right. :p
BTW, your sig with the quote from Durga is bloody awesome. I was obsessed with the ilovebees ARG and even burned all the wav files onto CDs and listen to them like an audio book on long trips. The story was great and Durga was the coolest character. I was a fan of the line where she threatened to "sting" someone who was threatening her and her human.
