Tonight’s Retro Night game is the (in)famous Shadowrun! You know, the game MS released and then immediately fired the entire dev team so they couldn’t attempt to fix any play balance problems or release DLC - yeah that one! Anyway, the game has bots and crazy powers. I would suggest getting at least 30-45 [...]

Anyone going to be on for this? I flagged myself as yes but it is still up in the air. My wife is saying we have a house project to work on tonight. I would like to be on though because i love the bloody game.

I'm probably out. I have to go to my parents' house to help them move some furniture. They are getting new carpet, so we have to move a grand piano, among other things. If I do get online, it will be later, and likely after Shadowrun is over.

This summer when i have a little more free time i really hope to be able to commit more firmly to these events.

I am especially sad i have missed the Battlestations night and might miss Shadowrun since i think both games are actually very good.

Yeah, we need to get B:M back in the rotation. I think it failed the first time around.

I'm just kind of talking now, but i think some of the retro games need to be scheduled for a certain hour slot on a friday or saturday (ie. the big gaming nights). I would be willing to do an hour of Shadowrun before a night of CoD4 or H3 and if it was a bigger night we could have a full party play one game and then that full party switch games (so nobody is left out).

I am excited for Shadowrun and hope to be on around 9:00 (baby dependent).

Also, today is my wife's last day of work, so my gaming schedule will have a lot less baby conflict since she won't have any more papers to grade. Hooray!

I am jealous she is done. I am smack in the middle of all the final testing, moving schools, field trips. Blah. Super irritating.

BTW Duster, i really dig the look of your current sig - it has a tattoo flash kind of feel.

Good games Duster and Wook.

Shadowrun, in case anyone else finds it cheap is an awesome game. It has a steep learning curve but there is just so many tactics and cool things you can do. Wook, Duster, and i spent a good 2 hours tearing up the bots and we only made it to Medium level bots. There are still Hard and Insane bots.

Playing it again actually really pisses me off the development studio was dissolved and no new maps and such will come for the game. It deserves a sequel or more maps.

Sorry for not joining, but I only had time to jump into some quick games before heading to work. I didn't want to jump out on you guys mid game like I did the COD crowd.

The game is fun, but crazy. It gets very complex and complicated towards the later rounds.

It's definitely a game that deserved much better treatment than it received and it's well worth $10.98 (http://product.half.ebay.com/Shadowrun_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ54826783)!!!!!!!!!!

I would recommend picking this one up, guys. I look forward to keeping it in the retro game rotation.

I also find it interesting to see the style people play. I tend to play a magic using dwarf.

Duster was using a tech heavy elf (which is kind of unusual imo) whereas Wook was playing a human with a blend of both (iirc).

I always snag Rez first. I do my best to not buy a weapon until round 3 because i try to save and get Summon a little earlier.

I wanted the elf for speed. My unusual choice probably reflects my n00b status.

No it is a decent choice. The elf is fast and regens health and essence pretty quickly.

If you are going heavy tech though - the human is a good choice because it doesn't reduce your essence by that much (and therefore leaves you with more magic to get a spell or two). So if you are plugging in wired reflexes, a glider, etc. a human is a great choice.

Also, that little taste has piqued my interest in the game again. Send me an invite just about any time someone wants to play and there is a good chance i will switch over (as long as the ladies are asleep). You also may see me sending out invites over the weekend.

My apologies to Slitt for hitting him up with a couple invites last night. I thought he said he had the game and wanted to play last night.... looking at the forum this morning he didn't. Sorry man if i was irritating.

I started with SMG, then went to the sniper, then to the rifle.

I think the best combo might be smg/sniper. The rifle didn't seem to pack as much damage as it should based on the reload times and kickback.

No big deal. I just don't own the game. I enjoy it...but I just had it for a few weeks from GF.

I am not a fan of the rifle at all - it seems like it is just mediocre at all ranges. The sniper is great at long range but really tough to use. Be aware if you use smartlink and a sniper rifle the autoaim of smartlink will pull your reticle away from a headshot and pull it to center body mass. I personally find the sniper tough to use because so many people use wired reflexes and move so quickly.

Also, dwarves are immune to headshots to it takes as many headshots as body shots to take them down.

since i play a dwarf and like to get in close to drain their essence i tend toward short range weapons. I like the SMG/shottie combo.

I like using a Troll with smartlink and minigun, my only complaint is they are a tad slow. The first I normally buy is tree, followed by smarlink, then minigun. Send me an invite if you all decide to play Sunday, Shadowrun is a guilty pleasure of mine.

A troll with smartlink, minigun, and a tree backing him is a force to be reckoned with.

That is actually why i rock the dwarf, i like using him as a troll slayer. :D

Would love to get some games in with you Nole, Shadowrun is also one of my big guilty pleasures.

I usually run with an Elf because of the regen ability and their quickness.

My first round I'll either get Res or Tree, then the other second round. Sometimes I'll save up to get summon on the second round.

I wasn't crazy about it and ended up selling it, but for $11, I might buy it again as long as it'll show up in the retro rotation fairly often.

All this Shadowrun talk reminds me of the old RPG, sounds like alot of the material came straight out of the books as well.

It is loosely based on the RPG (eg. they bought the rights to the RPG).

The problem is that it isn't based enough on the RPG to satisfy those those who have been fans of Shadowrun for years but it has enough RPG elements that it makes it a much more complex FPS than a Halo.

It really is just a fantasy/sci-fi Counter-Strike.

Also, as an addendum, the tabletop RPG was awesome. I played Shadowrun for several years of elementary school and still have a few of my old books.

My favorite class was playing an urban shaman. Cat shaman FTW!

edit: I also had an very cool street samurai that i used for a couple adventures.

I enjoyed the Shadowrun RPG as well.

I usually played a human or elf hacker. I took strange glee in making the GM create a special gaming night for just me as I hacked a computer in the middle of a game that was an important plot point.

I guess I will have to learn this game on the PC to play against everyone.

We do need some Vista folks in the mix so the newer players can harvest the achievements.

I forgot to tell Duster and Wook last night to teabag me so they could get the viral achievement from me.

I use to play as a Human Street Samurai based loosely on Cash Cole.......the old days.-biggrin-

Okay, I placed an order for this on Half today, so I should have the game next week. Here's hoping it makes frequent appearances at our retro nights.

Have you played it before Gramps?

A couple things to keep in mind if you haven't...

1. Before you get into games with people or bots - do the tutorials.

2. Seriously, the game won't make a damn bit of sense without doing the tutorials.

3. Hook up with us and game. :D

It has a kind of steep learning curve and can overwhelm you with options. In the beginning pick a race, pick a gun, and go to town. Then slowly add various tech and magic to see what you like.

Yeah, I owned it a while back and got bored with it. In fact, I think I was in a few games with you and other clannies back when I had it.
