I agree with a lot of your ideas Duster.

1. Appointment gaming: A great idea. The problem is how so many people have issues (including me) committing to a certain time. Kids get in the way of stuff like that so often. However i would absolutely love to have some nights where we get in some games of Carcassonne, Shadowrun, Midway Battlestations, hell even Call of Duty 2.

2. I don't think i have been bitten too much on the horrific games. Well other than Yaris tricking me into running it once. The media hype machine is starting to trouble me on games. Assassins Creed is the perfect example. Is it ass? Is it a great innovative game? Is it really something in between? You absolutely can't tell by reading reviews. I now just trust the 1Up Yours guys and Penny Arcade.

3. Amen brother, amen. I'm really burned out on competitive clan matches. I love interacting with other clans. I love gaming with other clans. But when it isn't a mixer and it is a clan match then too many competitive streaks come out. I'm simply not that competitive, and probably in reality, not that good. So when the game gets super serious and competitive i tend to become a liability. That being said, i do hate losing repeatedly and like taking the games seriously. Just not taking the win or loss seriously. Play to enjoy the game, play to improve, play as if it was serious, realize it is so not serious.

4. I wish i had more people near me into analog games. I seriously have a large board game collection and probably 70% of them have never been played or been played just once. I see games i want to buy so badly (Arkham Horror) but knowing it will take like 3 hours and has hundreds of pieces... i know it will never hit the table so why waste the money. That is the problem with being all grown-up and having friends scattered all over. Live, when it works, is the only thing that lets me play many of those games.

addendum: I don't think i could ever break myself from chasing those easy achievements. I like the sound it makes when it unlocks too much.

Ticket to Ride Ticket to Ride | BoardGameGeek (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/9209) and Carcassonne are the two games i use to introduce non-gamers to non-traditional board games.

I also sometimes use Apples to Apples if they are someone who doesn't like board games at all but enjoy card games.

Duster, do you have a BGG account and your game collection listed online?

Nice article Duster.

I too wish I had more people near me to play board games. Jalth and I have a huge collection, though most of it is typical stuff you can get at any store. Scene-its, cranium games, etc. But most has never been played or opened.

Assassin's creed has been a really enjoyable game. The story is interesting. Parts of the missions, etc do get repetitive. But the way the game is presented is neat. I would say it isn't a $60 game, but if you can find it sub $40, it would be worth it.

I do agree we need to try o schedule game nights and stick to them. I really would like to go back and play some older games like miyu said. Shadowrun, carcassone, etc. Many of the games don't support large parties, but that might help get them in the rotation again. Get the min number of people to commit with a few alternates. Set up a reasonable time, even if it is just an hour before or after other bigger draw games would be a blast. Heck, for a boring and simple as Uno was, it was a great way to pend some time chit-chatting with clan members while mindlessly playing Uno.

Clan matches I can leave or take. I prefer the social mixer types, but I do like trying to get in the competitive ones as well. We need to try to include both and make sure we keep it in the minds of those that signed up so they aren't forgotten about again.

I played Cranium Conga over the holiday break. What a horribly random game. No strategy at all, no decisions to be made.

Scheduled game nights would be cool if they were like once a week. Maybe once a week have a retro night. That way people who are fully immersed in their CoD or Halo might be able to pull away for one night to get in a couple rounds of Chromehounds. I know i could dig Brik issuing orders again. ;)

Clan matches are good. I do think we should have both kinds, mixers and competitive. I think people like Jimmy, Czar, Doug, and probably a few others i'm forgetting, are damn good Halo players who could do us proud in a clan match. I just have to realize that no matter how much i enjoy playing with them i'm simply not competitive enough to throw my name in the ring for those matches. And that is ok, it takes all kinds of players to round out a clan. I think it would be nice if our clan expanded some. Perhaps have enough of a competitive core that some of the MLG folk (like Chezterr) could find a home here with us as well. Then us social butterflies, like me, can focus on the forums and goofy games like Culdcept Saga. I think it would be awesome to have enough people who are truly into the racing games to see you guys have a Forza club that would race competitively. I was hoping something like that would have sprouted up with Gears but it didn't.

Either way, that is my long-winded way of saying i think the clan matches are great - just not so much my thing. The mixers though, are awesome, and very much my thing.

As for the retro nights, party size is an issue. That is why we might want to kind of take slight signups - for instance say next Thursday we are thinking Shadowrun and Battlestations, who wants to be in what? 4 sign up for Stations and 5 or 6 for Shadow and everyone has fun. I hate having a retro night and the party being full by the time i log on. :(

I am all for trying to schedule some games. There are dozens of older games that are good that really didn't get their time to shine (they are also <$20 now). Shadowrun and Battlestations quickly come to mind. Hell, even Big Bumpin' is pretty damn fun.

Duster: if you ever have board games, I'm in. Also, you should consider good old Risk.

Thanks, Miyu. With what feels like a limited amount of time to game with, though, I really don't see myself playing anything besides Halo 3. Chromehounds was well worth the $20 or whatever I paid for it, but it just can't compete with the Halo experience.

Oh i understand. I was choosing the "Brik as commander" situation as an example of how much fun we have also had in other games when it gels together. Especially when the games aren't be played competitively and everyone is just screwing around.

Some of my most tense and white knuckle gaming moments have been in Halo. Oddly enough many of them were on Waterworks (which is still a map i have a soft spot for).

But some of those times when i have simply had the most fun have been in Chromehounds, DOA4, and CoD2. Times when i think everyone was socializing and just having a good time. I think the conversations i have had with Martin in CoD2 about music have been worth their weight in gold.

That is why i think the retro gaming night every so often could be fun. Make them very low stress and lightly organized for those who show up. That way if the game chosen strikes your fancy, get an hour in and switch to Halo. If not, then there might be something else next month.
